Greenville Mosquito Squad West Nile Virus

West Nile VirusWith the first West Nile Virus death of the season in neighboring North Carolina, now is the time to for mosquito control in Greenville. Late summer and early fall is when we see the cases of West Nile Virus diagnosed for the season. You may feel like because school is in session and the nights are beginning to cool off that you’re out of danger, but not quite yet. West Nile Virus is a dangerous disease transmitted by mosquitoes and should not be taken lightly.

West Nile Virus is Most Prevalent in August & September

The end of summer generally has a larger mosquito population than the beginning of summer. With more mosquitoes comes more disease. In Greenville this is especially true. We’ve been fortunate enough to have a dry summer but now the rains have been arriving more regularly and the temperatures are still warm, allowing the mosquitoes to thrive and reproduce.

Cooler Temperatures = More Outdoor Activitiesmosquitoe squad of greenville

Add to all of that, the slightly cooler temperatures. When 85 feels nice and cool, you know it’s been a hot summer. So with temperatures giving us a bit of a break, all of us are spending more time outside. More time outside means, you’ve got it, more exposure to potentially infected mosquitoes.

If you’d like to enjoy these lovely early fall days without worrying about catching West Nile Virus from the mosquitoes in your yard, call Mosquito Squad of Greenville. We can eliminate up to 90% of the mosquitoes in your Greenville yard with our traditional barrier spray and it will last for up to 3 weeks!

Summer is Over: But Greenville Mosquitoes Didn’t Get the Memo

mosquitoe squad of greenvilleJust because the official end of summer is here, doesn’t mean mosquito season is over. Quite the contrary in fact. Mosquitoes will be out in Greenville for quite a while still with the warm weather we are still fortunate enough to have. As we emerge from our air conditioned homes to spend more time outdoors, living a pest-free outdoor lifestyle is more important now than in the heat of the summer. Whether you’re hosting a large event in your Spartanburg backyard, a birthday party at your Anderson home or a pool party at Lake Keowee this fall, make sure you and your guests are protected from annoying and dangerous mosquitoes.

No matter how great of a host or hostess you are, no matter how good the food is, no matter how fun the people are, nothing is going to keep the party from ending at dusk if the mosquitoes come out hungry. Make sure your party can extend well into the lovely South Carolina evening with mosquito control from Mosquito Squad of Greenville.

West Nile Virus is a Real Threat in Greenville

mosquitoes-transmit-west-nile-virus-SpartanburgTransmitted by mosquitoes, West Nile Virus (WNV) is a dangerous disease. Common in birds, humans and other mammals, WNV is a serious illness that can cause encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). We have several cases of human WNV every year in South Carolina and Greenville specifically has had a few confirmed cases each year for the last several years.

What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus doesn’t always present with symptoms. Only about 25% of people who are infected with WNV actually show symptoms at all. Those who do show WNV symptoms may experience fever, headache, body aches, rash or swollen lymph glands. Less than 1% of those infected WNV will experience severe encephalitis with symptoms that can include: high fever, convulsions, stiff neck, tremors, headache, coma, disorientation, muscle weakness or paralysis and in very few cases even death. If you think you may have WNV you should seek medical attention immediately.

West Nile Virus Prevention

With no specific treatment, cure or vaccine for WNV in humans it is best to take preventative measures to avoid mosquitoes and mosquito bites. Start by protecting yourself and your family in the place where you spend most of your outdoor living time, your own back yard. With Mosquito Squad of Greenville’s traditional barrier spray we can eliminate 85-90% of the mosquitoes in your yard. Our mosquito controls spray eliminates mosquitoes on contact and continues working for up to 3 weeks. Sign up for the season and we’ll respray every 3 weeks so you don’t have to worry about WNV or any other mosquito-borne illness all season long.

West Nile Virus Reporting in Greenville

While doctors will handle reporting human cases of WNV and veterinarians will report animal cases of WNV it is up to all of us to report on dead birds. West Nile Virus actually cycles between mosquitoes and birds. Mosquitoes bite birds with high levels of WNV and become infected, passing the virus on to humans and other birds and animals.

report-dead-blue-jays-in-greenvilleTo keep mosquito control agencies aware of WNV in their area it is important that you report dead birds from March through November to help the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) track the spread of WNV through our area. The five most important birds to report are American Crows, Fish Crows, Blue Jays, House Finches and Dead House Sparrows. Never touch a dead bird with your bare hands and check out the SCDHEC website for specific instructions.

Protection from Vector-Borne Canine Illness is Important to Mosquito Squad of Greenville!

Tillman.
Tillman.

Canine Lyme Disease and Canine Heartworms are the two vector-borne illnesses that can be spread to our pets though ticks and mosquitoes. As pet owners who consider Tillman (our Golden Retriever) to be a part of the family, we fully understand how important it is to you to protect your pets as actively as you protect your children.

If your dog has been diagnosed with arthritis, joint problems and a variety of other ailments that aren’t responding to treatment or therapy from your veterinarian, Canine Lyme Disease may be to blame. This arthropod-borne disease can wreak havoc on our health and the health of our pet as well as cause dangerous disorders such as Anemia in your pet. Symptoms indicating your dog may have a tick-borne illness can include a loss of appetite, lethargy and depression, pain, diarrhea, vomiting, edema in the extremities, hemorrhaging, neurological disorders such as seizures, and even death.

Greenville Canine Lyme Disease protectionWhen it comes to your dogs and cats, Heartworm is one of the most preventable illnesses and one of the most costly to treat. Only the bite of the mosquito can infect your dog or cat with Heartworm. Once bitten by an infected mosquito it takes about seven months for the larvae to mature into adult heartworms. These worms can live for 5-7 years lodging into your pet’s heart, lungs, and surrounding blood vessels. If not caught in time it can even lead to death.

For both of these illnesses, there are steps you can take to protect your family, your home and your beloved pet. Please see our suggestions below:

  • Deer ticks in your backyard waiting for you to walk byProtect from ticks – Your veterinarian can advise you on the best tick protection for your dog, it is also a must to exercise tick safety during tick season. Even more important is to treat the areas where ticks thrive because even the best laid plans that include spot-on canine tick treatments can falter and put your dog at risk. The best way for pet owners and non-pet owners to keep their loved ones safe from the risks of tick-borne illnesses, such as Lyme Disease, is to take control of your property by keeping overgrowth, debris and brush to a minimum. In addition to mowing and landscape cleanup it is also important to have your property treated by a licensed tick control professional as another line of defense in reducing the risk of coming into contact with a potentially infected tick.
  • Mosquito Squad of GreenvilleDefend against mosquitoes – Keep your yard free of standing water and excessive brush piles to keep those pesky mosquitoes from multiplying and staying. A drop of water is enough to create a mosquito breeding ground. Mosquitoes also love cool dark places just as much as your pet does, except they don’t see them as a place to beat the heat of the day, but as a drive through for a quick meal. Allow your pets to enjoy their favorite parts of your yard with the help of Mosquito Squad’s barrier spray.

Mosquito Squad of Greenville will break the Heartworm cycle by spraying your entire yard, starting at the perimeter and working inward. While in our fight against Lyme Disease, we offer a dual defense program which includes tick tubes in conjunction with our seasonal barrier spray to keep you tick free all season. Our highly effective barrier spray eliminates adult ticks while tick tube implementation applied twice per season eliminates the nymph tick, snuffing out disease at its source! Mosquito Multiplicity; Revealing the Results of How Just One Mosquito in Your Greenville Backyard Can Spawn Thousands!

Mosquito Squad of GreenvilleMosquito season is in full-force here in Greenville and Western NC. Mosquitoes are not only bothersome, they are also pose a dangerous health concern due to the various mosquito-borne illnesses they can carry. It only takes ONE bite from a mosquito carrying West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), or LaCrosse Encephalitis to make you, or a loved one, very sick. With that ONE infected mosquito in mind, we want to educate residents about how just one single mosquito can turn into so many more — in the blink of an eye…

When it comes to the amount of mosquitoes one female mosquito can spawn in your backyard in just four weeks, fact becomes stranger than fiction. The combination of warm weather, spring showers and an unprotected setting equals a recipe for a mosquito invasion.  By simple multiplication, the natural order of the mosquito population turns an army of one into an army of over 1 billion mosquitoes! Here is how it works…

  • Mosquitoes in your Greenville backyard week oneWeek One  In order for a female mosquito to develop viable eggs for reproduction she must obtain a blood meal from a human or other mammal. Once this has been acquired, she will then proceed to lay up to 300 eggs. Mosquitoes can lay up to three batches of eggs during their short lifetime. From here a female mosquito has already perpetuated a significant amount of blood-thirsty offspring in which about half or more, (male/female probability), will also become blood thirsty mosquitoes looking to start a family in your backyard too!
  • Mosquitoes in your Greenville backyard week twoWeek Two — This same backyard now includes 150 new female mosquitoes, plus the original matriarch which brings the total to approximately 151 female mosquitoes. This is where the equation really gets interesting; the 150 daughters of the original female mosquito will also lay up to 300 eggs each. This brings the total number of mosquitoes up to 45,300, of which at least half can also be expected to be female.
  • Mosquitoes in your Greenville backyard week threeWeek Three — Out of the prior week’s 45,300 mosquitoes, of which approximately 22,650 female mosquitoes will once again lay up to 300 eggs each bringing the number during their egg laying period to 6,795,300! This brings the total to almost 7 million mosquitoes brought into your backyard via one female mosquito in just 3 short weeks. Using the same simple formula of probability with half being born female will leave 3,397,000 females ready to do it all over again.
  • Mosquitoes in your Greenville backyard week fourWeek Four —  The most alarming answer to any outdoor living equation will weigh in at a whopping 1,319,250,000 mosquitoes from just one female mosquito! In addition to the biting, annoyance and irritation mosquitoes deliver, there is a chance just one of these 1.3+ billion mosquitoes could infect you, or a loved one with a mosquito-borne illness.

Fortunately, the moral of this story can have a happy ending! Mosquito Squad of Greenville can prevent and control mosquitoes in your backyard — from the very first female! Our trusted barrier spray program will eliminate mosquitoes that are present on your property and prevent more from taking up residence. By reducing the number of mosquitoes within your treated property, you can literally eliminate billions of mosquitoes. Not only will eliminating these mosquitoes offer you the freedom and peace of mind to enjoy the outdoors this season, it will also reduce the number of mosquitoes within your yard that may harbor illness or disease.

Raising awareness of Lyme Disease starts in your Greenville backyard!

May is Lyme Disease Awareness MonthMay is Lyme Disease Awareness month. This important annual event is supported by the Lyme Disease Foundation and is used to raise awareness and support of preventative measures which can be taken against Lyme disease. Just like mosquitoes, ticks are vectors, or transmitters, of disease. Though extremely serious, mosquito-borne disease affects only a few thousand individuals in the US each year, while tick-borne disease afflicts tens of thousands.

Deer tick or blacklegged tick on leaf waiting for you to pass byLyme Disease is an acute inflammatory disease caused by the bite of a tick infected with the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi. In the US, Lyme Disease is the most common tick-borne illness and since there is presently no vaccine for Lyme Disease in humans, prevention is the best method for thwarting the illness.

In America there are two main species of tick which carry and spread Lyme Disease. These are the  deer tick or black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in the North central and Eastern parts of the country and the Western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacifus) on the West (Pacific) coast. The Deer tick is  found in wooded areas throughout the Carolinas. Mosquito Squad of Greenville aims to raise awareness of the disease, and the ticks who carry it, in order educate Greenville and Western NC residents about Lyme Disease and how they can take steps to prevent it.

Raising awareness of Lyme Disease starts in your own backyard!

The impetus of our service is to eliminate and prevent the ticks on your property that could be potential carriers of Lyme Disease and other tick-borne illnesses, no ticks = no risk for disease. Knowing how to properly eradicate and control the tick within its natural environment is the first step in staying healthy by reducing the chance of coming into contact with a tick that could potentially harbor the bacteria that causes the disease. Mosquito Squad recommends the following steps for tick-proof yard:

The 6 C’s to Tick-Proof Your Yard

Deer ticks in your backyard waiting for you to walk by1. Clear out. Reduce your tick exposure by clearing out areas where lawn and tree debris gathers. Ticks thrive in moist, shady areas and tend to die in sunny, dry areas. Locate compost piles away from play areas or high traffic. Separate them with wood chips or gravel. Don’t position playground equipment, decks and patios near treed areas.

2. Clean. Eliminate leaf litter and brush by cleaning it up around the house and lawn edges, mow tall grasses and keep your lawn short.

Daylilies3. Choose plants. Select plants and shrubs that are not attractive to deer and/or install physical barriers to keep deer out of your yard. Check with your local nursery to determine the best choices for your area.

4. Check hiding places. Know tick hiding places and check them frequently. Fences, brick and rock walls and patio retaining walls are popular hiding places.

5. Check your petsCare for family pets. Family pets can suffer from tick-borne disease and also carry infected ticks into the home. Talk to your veterinarian about using tick collars, topicals and sprays. As with all pest control products, be sure to follow directions carefully.

6. Call the pros. Professionals utilize both barrier sprays that can kill “adult” ticks on the spot as well as “tick tubes.” Strategically placed, “tick tubes” prompt field mice to incorporate tick-killing material in their bedding, effectively eliminating hundreds of tick nymphs found in each mouse nest.

how tick tubes work
How tick tubes work.

We specialize in a dual tick prevention and control program that targets ticks during each stage of development. Our barrier spray will eliminate adult ticks on contact while tick tubes are placed in key areas on your property, twice per season, to eliminate ticks during nymph stage. Tick tubes can dramatically decrease the chances of encountering a Lyme infected tick on your property.

Chikungunya in the U.S. – Should Greenvile Residents Be Worried About This New Mosquito-Borne Virus?

mosquito squad mosquito
Mosquito-borne diseases are increasing.

Have you seen all the media attention on a new mosquito-borne virus called Chikungunya?  Not only is it spreading rapidly, it is getting National news coverage on programs like Good Morning America.   That’s because the virus is new to the United States and is spreading quickly.  In fact, confirmed cases are as close to us as Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida as well as other states.

There is good and bad new regarding Chikungunya.  The good news is that although mosquitoes, specifically the Aedes aegypti, spread the virus no locally transmitted cases have been confirmed.  So how is the virus spreading?  By travelers who visit other areas where these mosquitoes are infected.  The greatest majority of travelers lately are coming from the Caribbean where they contracted the disease.

The bad news is that with the increasing number of confirmed cases, officials fear mosquitoes within the United States could bite an infected person and begin the transmission to others.  The other bad news is that because the virus is so new, there is no vaccine, cure or specific treatment for Chikungunya.  Fortunately, most symptoms that include fever, headaches, muscle pain and an itchy rash can be treated and typically do not last too long.  But, some with the disease in other countries have reported joint pain lasting as long as five years or a relapse of this pain after symptoms had subsided.

Where Do Mosquitoes Lurk in Greenville Backyards?

Mosquito season is in full swing here in Greenville, and if you’re like me, you are doing your best to keep the pests out of your yard. To be successful at this endeavor, you need to know a little about where mosquitoes like to hang out in your yard. Remember that mosquitoes really need two things for life – water and plants. Water is an essential component of breeding since female mosquitoes must have standing water in which to lay their eggs. Plants are necessary because, contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes eat more plant juices than blood. Only female mosquitoes feed on blood, and they only do this in preparation to lay eggs. At all other times, they eat plant juices like their male counterparts.

So let’s take a look at a normal yard and see where mosquitoes might be lurking.

Common_backyard_mosquito_sources_Greenville1.    Saucers Underneath Potted Plants – These saucers catch overflow from watering and rainwater. They are perfect places for females to lay eggs.

2.    Water Bowls for Pets – If your pet isn’t outdoors a lot and doesn’t consume the water, it will become stagnant and start drawing mosquitoes in.

3.    Children’s Toys – Most toys have many divots and crevices where rainwater collects. Even a teaspoon of stagnant water will attract mosquitoes.

4.    Fountains and Bird Baths – Even if it is not rainwater, still water attracts females.

5.    Ponds – Having no outlets, ponds are filled with old, still water and are prefect mosquito breeding grounds.

6.    Neglected Pools – Like ponds, neglected pools are filled with brackish water. Mosquitoes won’t be far away.

7.    Buckets – If they are left out after gardening, buckets are perfect water catchers and perfect mosquito breeding grounds.

Mosquito larvae hatch in standing water.
Mosquito larvae hatch in standing water.

8.    Grass Clippings – Piles of grass clippings are oozing with plant juices. They’re really like a mosquito buffet.

9.    Leaky Hoses – Saturated ground can create enough standing water to allow breeding. Even though it is only a little, mosquitoes will find it.

10. Holes in Trees – Cool, damp, and offering plenty of plant juices, holes in trees give mosquitoes perfect places to call home.

11. Clogged Gutters – Typically, gutters become clogged with plant refuse like leaves and pollen. Blockages cause water to pool and emit plenty of plant odors that mosquitoes find irresistible.

12. Uncovered Boats – Water will pool in the bottom of boats like it does in buckets. Especially if the area is undisturbed, it can become a mosquito haven.

13. Tires – Whether they are used as swings or exercise equipment, water will collect in old tires too.

14. Open Trash Bins – Water can collect in this area, and with decaying plant material likely present, they will be mosquito magnets.

Yards are filled with mosquito habitats we rarely consider, but now that you know where mosquitoes lurk in your yard, you can do something about it. Eliminate standing water by turning over items that could collect it. Change water in birdbaths every day or so. If you have a fountain or pool, be sure it is not neglected and that the water is circulating. Also, be sure to clear away plant refuse once you are finished trimming your lawn.

Finally, call Mosquito Squad of Greenville. Even if you are able to eliminate all standing water, you will still have some mosquitoes living on your property, but they can be easily eliminated with our mosquito barrier treatments. So call us today at (864) 277 – 4299 or visit our Mosquito Squad of Greenville website. Get rid of the lurkers and take back your yard.

Mosquito free life

You may already know how effective our barrier spray treatment is at eliminating mosquitoes and ticks.  We come out every 21 days to apply the barrier spray to the vegetation in your yard; where mosquitoes and ticks reside and feed.  This effectively eliminates them on contact once they touch the leaves.  But the barrier spray does more that just eliminate on contact.  It also contains a bonding agent that keeps the treatment from washing away in the rain.  The residual remains effective up to 21-days, eradicating those additional mosquitoes and fleas that have found their way to the vegetation.  In addition, it creates a protective barrier around your yard so other mosquitoes and ticks do not enter.
